MTF Full Floater versus the Semi-Floater Watts Link

Our customers ask what is the advantages are of the MTF Watts Link full floating axle kit over a MTF Watts Link semi-floating axle kit.

First it's necessary to understand the differences of a full floating axle and a semi- floating axle.

On a semi-floating axle the wheel bolts directly to the axle.

Advantage of semi floating axle:

  • They are less expensive.
  • If you are using your mustang for mostly cruising and are not planning on hard cornering or track driving, then the semi-floating is the choice for you.

Disadvantage of semi floating axle:

  • If the axle should ever break, the wheel could possibly exit the car.
  • On hard cornering lateral forces cause axle deflection.  This causes lateral rotor deflection and forces the caliper pistons back into the caliper allowing a gap between the brake pads and the rotor.  The brake fluid is forced back and the next brake pedal cycle will feel as though the brake pedal will hit the floor due to insufficient fluid in the caliper piston bore.  Insufficient fluid in the caliper piston bore requires the master cylinder to add more fluid to the rear brakes and less fluid to the rest of the system and thus causing a low pedal.  This condition is commonly known as knockback.

Advantage of full floating axle:

  • The wheel mounts to a two bearing hub and not the axle, therefore, no axle deflection.  The hub carries the weight of the car. If the axle should break the wheel remains on the car and won’t exit the car.
  • Eliminates lateral force and axle deflection to the rotors, so no knockback occurs.
  • The axle only carries rotational power, no vertical load. Vertical load is carried by the two bearing hub. There is no vertical load on the axle.
  • The load capacity increases substantially.
  • There is easy center carrier exchange for the race enthusiast. Just remove the wheels, then the three bolt caps on each side. Then slide out the axles and unbolt the street center carrier. Now your ready to put in the sweet spare center carrier for the weekend of racing.

Disadvantage of full floating axle:

  • Cost (but benefits are substantial.)

What about a panhard bar?

The Watts Link is an upgraded design from the panhard bar. The panhard bar cannot keep the axle centered during vertical motion and allows the differential to move horizontally.
